Starting from Higashimurayama Station, we've put together routes by theme. Times are only rough guides; adjust travel and time at each site to the day's conditions and official information.
Course A | History and Ken Shimura (half day)
- In front of Higashimurayama Station: start at the Ken Shimura statue and the Ken Shimura tree.
- At Shofukuji Jizodo Hall, Tokyo's only National Treasure building, take in the Muromachi-period Zen-style architecture.
- See the other “real thing,” the nationally designated Important Cultural Property “Genko-era itabi,” at Tokuzoji and the Itabi Museum.
- Finish with Musashino udon (niku-jiru udon) somewhere in town.
Course B | Soak up nature (full day)
- Morning: a satoyama walk at Hachikokuyama Woods, through the coppice woods known for the My Neighbor Totoro “Shichikokuyama” theory.
- Lunch: refuel with Musashino udon.
- Afternoon: head to Lake Tama (Murayama Reservoir). Enjoy the Taisho-era intake tower and cycling or strolling amid water and greenery (a nearby scenic spot spanning municipal boundaries).
- If you have time and energy to spare, add “one more half day” at nearby Seibuen Amusement Park.
Course C | Iris season only (half to full day)
- Time it to the iris peak, usually late May to mid June. Enjoy about 100,000 irises at Kitayama Park (Iris Garden).
- Combine it with Shofukuji Jizodo Hall (National Treasure) in the same Noguchi-cho area.
- Festival dates and whether illuminations are held vary by year, so always check the official site for the latest.
