SeasonsLAST UPDATED 2026.06.08

Higashimurayama's seasonal calendar — when's the best time to visit?

The peak is, of course, the June irises. But Higashimurayama has something to see in every season. Here's help deciding “when to go.”

Opening hours, fees and event dates change. Before you go, please confirm the latest details on each facility's or organizer's official information.

Higashimurayama is a town where nature is close at hand. We've listed what to enjoy in each season. Bloom and event timing shifts from year to year, and whether events are held can change too. Check each facility's or organizer's official site for confirmed information.

Spring (March–May)

  • A pleasant season for the fresh greenery around Hachikokuyama Woods and Lake Tama. Good for satoyama walks and cycling.
  • Enjoy the budding coppice woods and seasonal wildflowers.

Early summer (late May–June) ★ high season

  • The irises at Kitayama Park (Iris Garden) are at their peak. Usually late May to mid June, when the Higashimurayama Iris Festival is held.
  • About 100,000 irises of roughly 600 varieties are a stunning sight — the most recommended time of the whole year.
  • Festival dates and whether evening illuminations are held vary by year.

Summer (July–August)

  • A satoyama walk amid deep green. With plenty of shade, Hachikokuyama Woods is easy to walk even in the hot season (don't forget heatstroke precautions).
  • Shofukuji Jizodo Hall is said to have some of its few annual interior-opening days in summer (varies by year; check the official site).

Autumn (September–November)

  • A season of beautiful autumn foliage around Hachikokuyama Woods and Lake Tama. Ideal for satoyama walks and cycling.
  • The zelkova-lined avenue (the street with the Ken Shimura tree) also takes on autumn color.

Winter (December–February)

  • Clear air makes the view of Lake Tama's intake tower and water surface sharp and crisp. A season suited to a quiet history walk.
  • A good time to take your time visiting the National Treasure at Shofukuji Jizodo Hall and Tokuzoji.

Bloom timing, festivals and opening days vary with the weather and by year. Always check each facility's or organizer's official information for the latest before you go.
