For noodle lovers — soba, udon and ramen
Higashimurayama has eaten udon (mugikiri) since the Edo era — it's a noodle town at heart. For soba and udon there's plenty of choice: the Musashino udon institution Kikuya, the noodle-maker-run Noguchi Seimenjo, the stone-milled juwari soba of Masumoan, Tsuchiya in an old house, and Taguriya Genji by the station. For ramen there's the Jiro-style Takagi Noboo, rich iekei at Musashiya Akitsu, the soupless-noodle specialist Musha, and Ramen Nagomi (loved for abura-soba too). Pick by your mood.

On a day you want to eat big, head to the neighborhood Chinese Bonten, where you can also try the local “black yakisoba.” In the mood for Western food? There's real wood-fired pizza at Encuentro by Shin-Akitsu Station, and casual pasta and pizza at Italian Dining SATORU. At Sawadee right by Kumegawa Station, authentic Thai food brings a travel mood too.

To close a night walk, try Pokkura by Higashimurayama Station (proud of its charcoal grill and local sake), the stand-up grilled-offal bar Yakitori Nojima by Akitsu Station, or the late-night-friendly Akitsu Saketen. On a day to treat yourself, the proper eel at Unakei in Hagiyama-cho is recommended too. Pair it all with local Toshimaya brews “Kinkon” and “Okunokami” for a true Higashimurayama night.
